I am a California CPA (inactive) considering starting my own practice. My background is Big 6 audit experience (lol dating myself there, aren’t I?), and several years of industry experience in accounting, finance and project management. I left to stay home with kids, working part time running a small foundation. I am kicking around the idea of taking a few clients, to provide bookkeeping, payroll, manage payable/receivables. Small companies could outsource some or all of their accounting activities. I can do some tax, but would probably call in someone to consult on more complex returns. I am really just starting to explore this idea. I am interested in the best way to set this up, how to network with potential clients and other providers, how to beat her this off the ground. Any thoughts are appreciated.

This was me about 5 years ago and now I run a six figure accounting firm working part time. Well for starters, do you have small business accounting experience? Are you up to date with accounting technology?
Marina, at my previous position, I did some bookkeeping work for a small not-for-profit. I worked in QBO, and have recently trained on the features of QBO Accountant. I’m pretty proficient with systems in general, so I am hopeful that I can learn more of the QBO Apps from trainings and networking groups.
I would like to start small, but I’m unsure how to take the first steps. Do you have any advice?
