I've recently moved back to LA from Honolulu where I've been serving as Director of Finance and Corporate
Can anyone recommend a well respected Finance headhunter/recruiter in the LA area?
Answers
Is there such a thing "well respected headhunter/recruiter" who "can help...with..[a] job search"?
Peter Nelson at Century Group, I met with several headhunters in 2013 in the LA area and he was very responsive.
Thanks, I have heard about the Century Group and I do intend to contact them.
I have not worked with Century Group but they were referred to me by someone I trust. I was referred to Teresa Wright.
If you still have not touched base with FENG (Financial Executives Networking Group) Los Angeles. Please do. I would think that their network and their recruiter network will be a valuable resource to you.
Peter,
You may be doing this already, so pardon my questions if you are.
Given that recruiters are paid by companies to find people (i.e. they don't really help you with your search unless you match a client need), are you networking with people who can introduce you to the types of people (not recruiters, not inside
-Are you a member of FEI?
-Who have you worked with as service providers: e.g. bankers, attorneys,
-Do your family and friends know you are looking and have you asked them for introductions?
What job search support groups exist in the LA area?
Have you checked with the California CPA society?
More jobs come from networking than other channels.

Len,
Thanks for your reply. I haven't yet become a member of FEI, but I have been considering it at different times. These are all good questions and comments you brought up.
Thanks,
Peter
Peter, message me if you want to join the FENG so I can "sponsor" you. Sponsor is really not the right word, but that is what they use.
Emerson, thanks for your reply and the information you provided. Yes, I would like to join FENG (LA chapter). I would appreciate your sponsorship. Thanks, Peter
I'm a member of FENG and I have been to one of the 'mixers'. I'm a fan of the organization but not the mixers. I hear the emails are a good source of leads but to be honest I don't read them.
Peter,
I just visited your LinkedIn page and if you don't mind me saying it needs work. I get pinged 1 - 3 times a month from headhunters and in most cases it is because of my LinkedIn page.
I network quite a bit and I have been contacted occasionally through my network. The group is bankers, commercial insurance brokers, CPAs, etc.
LinkedIn is a sales device and yours isn't selling.
What part of LA are you in? Contact me and I can introduce you to some people. I know of a couple opportunities right now.
Jeff
Jeff,
I'm in West LA, so I'm looking for a Director of Finance position anywhere from the Westside to Downtown to South Bay to the Valley. How would you say my LinkedIn page needs work?
I'd be very interested in being introduced to some people. Please let me know.
Thanks,
Peter
Peter,
Your profile looks too much like your resume and you have too few connections. At least, that would raise a red flag with me but if you can make some good connections via networking instead that can still get you a job.
A LinkedIn profile is not something you only look at when you're job hunting but something you look at continuously and brush up whenever changes occur in your professional life.
Anders,
The accepted definition of a "red flag" is not what you think it means. Having the same LinkedIn profile as your resume is not a "red flag". It is not desirable but not a "red flag".
Thanks for clarifying Anon!
Just adding here some further reading on what recruiters look for in a LinkedIn profile and bare minimum should be 50 connections but the quality of the connections certainly also matter.
