My checklist is pretty much the Cooley VC due diligence checklist (not-shareable) plus my internal process checklist (company specific), tied to the HR checklist (primarily for accounts, which HR/IT handles, so it isn't on my list except as a "coordinate with HR/IT".

My list includes a section for every aspect of accounting system and business i.e., G/L, account structure, out of norm issues, etc., P/R, A/R, and so forth). Then I'd move on to departments and their issues, legal issues, audit issues, governmental issues, leases, banks, etc., etc.

Good files and documentation make the hand-off (and audit by the way) much easier. Check-lists for month-end and quarter-end closes. Shared electronic folders and e-mail folders logically devised.

As Keith said, it's due diligence and then some.
