The obvious answer is LinkedIn, but what about Twitter and other sites? Can those be used to my advantage in the job search?
How do you use social media with your job search?
Answers
Using social media can come in different forms.
First, it can be used a tool to show 'proof' behind your resume - providing access to work product/ideas that either networking contacts or companies can look at when reviewing your background. https://www.proformative.com/blogs/mark-richards/2013/07/20/proving-attractive-resume-be-true
Second, for using Twitter, the key to remember is that it is unlikely hiring managers or networking contacts will follow you - but will use as a research tool. You can build up a strong following within Twitter or get on lists, etc. - but in the end it's the content that matters. https://www.proformative.com/blogs/mark-richards/2011/01/20/using-twitter-promote-yourself
My recommendation is that you squeeze the most you can out of LinkedIn before investing much time into Twitter. LinkedIn it is much more direct route to getting the right people aware of who you are through your connections.
Hope this helps.

Twitter - and even Facebook - are an opportunity beyond Linkedin to ...
a) expand your digital footprint, and
b) show off your subject matter expertise
and most definitely "can" be used to your advantage.
I could see other social media being beneficial to get some insight on a potential employer in terms of some of the issues they may be facing.
Linkedin is poised to enhance communication. Using connections to have the ability to inquire, to get at the minimum an inside perspective. To add an opportunity to showcase skills and interest.
I used LinkedIn mostly. While other social media may be helpful, it can also be a time sink! And remember, the most important thing that you can do when looking for a job or contract assignment is to NETWORK! Provide something of value free to potential clients, and then follow up! Offer to meet with them and discuss issues at no cost. I also try to post relevant work issues on Linked In on a regular basis.
