How does the role of CEO change when a company goes public?

While I have not been the CEO of a public company, I have helped guide CEO's through this transition. The number of changes in the life of a CEO of a public company versus a private company are so numerous I cannot write them all down.

The best suggestion I have it to encourage the CEO to develop relationships with other public company CEO's. You might be lucky enough that someone in your area already has such a group organized.

You will also probably have some Board turnover through the IPO process. I encourage you to add public company executives to your Board. They can offer advice and mentoring to your CEO.
