At a previous company it was used in the Professional Services organization to set up a workflow approval system for the many Statements of Work coming through. Defined fields were filled in (start/end dates, rates etc), and they were tracked through stages. In one stage PS Ops, Legal and Finance had to approve before it went on to the next stage. Also used to track expiring SOWs.
We use SharePoint with a consultant, but otherwise have found it to be not user friendly. At this time we have elected not to use if for our accounting documents that need shared. We are looking into using our company's intranet site, but that had disadvantages as well. I would love to hear about other options people are using.
