Zero Based Budgeting for the not-for-profit / non-profit space

I have a few non-profits I've worked on, and with some budgeting is a core function. With others they are very cash oriented, and budgets are almost non-sensical. Have you tried a ZBB approach with non-profits, and do you have tips for how to approach the topic in ways that work and the volunteers involved are comfortable with?

Keith, I am a board member and treasurer for a young non profit with a similar profile. While the founder/Exec Director has great vision and passion, fundraising and income generation were not in the wheelhouse. While reality dictates that we be very cash oriented, the budgeting process helps focus the ED on having a strategic plan and road map to get from here to there. In truth, this is no different that the budgeting process in for profit company.
